The Compound Multiplier Effect in Dating Criteria
When searching for a romantic partner, adding criteria seems straightforward. However, statistically, each independent condition drastically shrinks the remaining demographic pool.
The Law of Joint Probability
If you look for someone who meets four independent filters:
- Within your preferred age group (say, 25% of population)
- Unmarried (say, 50% of cohort)
- Above a specific height threshold (say, 20% of cohort)
- In a specific earning bracket (say, 15% of cohort)
The joint probability is calculated as:
P = 0.25 × 0.50 × 0.20 × 0.15 = 0.00375 (0.375%)
That means less than 4 in 1,000 individuals meet all four criteria simultaneously before accounting for chemistry, mutual attraction, or location.
